Define Internet Marketing

Internet marketing is literally defined as marketing of products and services on the internet.  But what does that mean and why do it?  Everyone now a day is trying to get a digital footprint on the internet.  Almost every country in the world is connected to the internet.  This gives endless possibilities to new and existing customers all over the world.  With traditional marketing, you could only reach a few markets at a time.  If your company put out an ad in a newspaper, the only customers you could reach were the ones who got that newspaper.  Same goes for getting an ad on a TV channel, the only people who are going to see that ad are the ones who watch that TV channel.   With internet marketing, you can now reach as many people as possible around the world.  It would be very costly to actually do this, but you get the point.

With internet marketing, you now have all types of new marketing techniques, like Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and marketing, banner ads and email marketing.  SEO is probably the most complicated of these.  More and more schools are now teaching this with their curriculum because it is one of the most valuable to know.  SEO is defined as the process of improving your websites visibility in Google, Bing, Yahoo or any other search engine’s organic results.  If your company specializes in car maintenance in Columbia, you don’t want your website to come up on the 4th or 5th page of results on Google.  Everyone’s goal is to be on the first few pages, because typically no one searches past the first few pages.  A good SEO with keep you at the top of the rankings.  It is a continuous process because the rules are every changing.  This is why it’s the most complicated of these new techniques.

A good way to put out new ads and info is with email blasts and newsletters.  More and more companies are creating weekly, sometimes more often, email newsletters.  This way they can get new information to a mass number of people easily and effectively. Just about every website that you can sign up for has some sort of newsletter that you automatically sign up for when you create a log in.  This way companies don’t have to always ask for email addresses from people.   It’s also usually very easy to unsubscribe from them if you don’t want them anymore.  But who want’s to unsubscribe from new information every week?

These are a few ways that the internet is changing the landscape of marketing and there are many more.  Traditional marking and internet marketing are going to co-exist for years to come.  Make sure you’re on the bandwagon.  Most companies are doing the basic things and having great results.  Internet marketing is absolutely important to firms these days to survive.
